Soak up the atmosphere in one of the surrounding bars or cafés.
When we go on holiday we love to try new foods, enjoy world-renowned produce, and eat in glamorous or quirky restaurants.
There are many culinary treats awaiting you when you stay at Le Deran.
The local restaurant in Guemene, Aux Sabots Rouges, serves excellent food in a Bistro type pub with friendly staff. From fish & chips to boeuf bourguignon and tapas, you will be spoilt for choice.
If you like value for money restaurants but all home made food, try La Tourelle in Melrand. An oldy worldy setting with vine covered terrace, and food to die for, at lunch times the price is just 12€ for a 3 course meal with wine!
You can even eat Savoyarde food from the Alps, we have two excellent restaurants nearby, Le Capri in Priziac or Le Tavaillon in Pontivy.
Or why not try out one of the hundreds of creperies in the area, choose from so many savoury or sweet fillings, all washed down with the local Breton cider. There's no limit to how many you can eat!
If seafood is your thing, you will love the variety of freshly caught fish, crab, lobster, langoustines etc in the coastal restaurants such a this restaurant overlooking the beach at La Trinité su Mer.
Your really are spoilt for choice!
Absolutely fantastic holiday. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend this property to anyone with large families.
Our children enjoyed splashing in the pool, the garden games supplied by the owners and the older lot had some lovely walks with the dogs and lazing in the garden. This place was heaven, so nicely kept & fantastic facilities. The owners, who live next door were wonderful and friendly.
The Gregorian family
The property amazed us at first sight. The Sky, books and dvds were a thoughtful extra. The garden pool with pipe heating was great. The best part of the outside was the covered barbecue area with its fantastic table and tractor seat chairs and a wonderful fire pit we used at night to sit around and chat about the day. We all thought this was the best holiday home we have ever gone to. Rachel and Tony are great people, always willing to help or advise but only when we asked for it. Otherwise they left us to get on with what turned out to be a wonderful break. They worked hard to make a lovely holiday home. We all wish you every success and we would of course love to come back.
The Conway family.
Best equipped self catering holiday we've been on. Decent sized mugs, pint glasses, decent tin opener, oven gloves, even bbq equipment! The house exceeded our expectations and was great value for money.
Safe for young kids, plenty to do for all ages. Relaxing, peaceful & the English owners are on hand if need be but by no means intrusive. Property is in the middle of nowhere which is what makes it so peaceful but shops are only 10 mins away in the car. Plenty of nice little villages around & about, nearest beach about 45 mins. Bigger towns of Carnac & Lorient worth a visit, as is the Pont Scorff zoo & Kingoland for kids. We would definitely recommend this beautiful holiday home & it's lovely owners to anyone.
The Anderson family.
One thing is certain-you won't be bored!
Visit the Carnac standing stones, take a boat trip around the islands of the Gulf of Morbihan, cycle along the Nantes-Brest canal, visit Quiberon's wild coast, stroll around historic towns like Vannes, Josselin, Quimper, visit a chateau, hire a wind surfer or board and spend the day on the beach, visit a zoo, acquarium or animal park, spend a day at the Lorient Interceltic festival, see the Breton horses at the National stud, visit the WW2 resistance museum, go for a walk on one of the many marked routes, buy French food in a market, eat out in the fabulous restaurants!
This list is not exhaustive, many more ideas are provided in our welcome folder.
In case you are unfamiliar with our part of France, we are situated just 5km from the small village of Persquen, and 10km from the small historic town of Guemene sur Scorff.
Our part of Brittany is easy to get to; there are plenty of plane routes from the UK-fly into Dinard Lorient, Rennes or Brest, to name a few.
Ferries from the UK also serve Brittany-crossings from Portsmouth to Saint Malo, Caen, Cherbourg or Le Havre, or from Plymouth to Roscoff.
If you come to stay at Le Deran, you can expect a very warm welcome!
This large stone house with thatched roof is perfect to keep cool away from the summer heat outside.
The house has 4 bedrooms with comfy beds, sleeping up to 7 people, 2 bathrooms, a large character lounge with wood burning stove and very comfy settees to relax on after a hard day's sightseeing.
The hand made oak kitchen has a dining table and everything you need to cook up a feast. If you prefer cooking al fresco, the stone barbecue is perfect, just outside the kitchen on the large patio.
There is a vine covered pergola, providing some shade, and enough seating for all!
The surrounding gardens have sunny & shady areas, and plenty of seating and loungers around.
Finish off the evening around the fire pit with a glass of wine, and chatting about your adventures of the day.
Look out for tomorrows blog post, all about our beautiful area!
Many of our guests know us well, but for those of you who don't, here's a brief introduction to us!
We are Rachel Tony & Rosie Steel.
We are from Yorkshire, and moved out to Brittany in 2005 - seems like a long time ago!
We have lived in our current house since 2012, and started renting it out to all you lovely holiday makers in 2014.
We move out to a neighbouring building for the summer months, which is a feat in itself :-)
We decided to start renting the house as a gite as we live in such a lovely area of Brittany, less than an hour from the coast, and close to valleys, rivers, towns & villages; plenty to explore & do.
We love meeting new people and if you stay here, knock on our door and we will share some of our stories over a glass of wine or two!
Come back tomorrow to find out about our accommodation, and what you can look forward to when you stay here!
* Two online travel giants (Booking Holidays Group and Expedia) dominate the marketplace with an estimated combined market share of 95%. Hoteliers cannot compete with their advertising scale and are locked into costly distribution agreements, with a commission on bookings sometimes reaching 25% (or even higher).
* Further to this, price parity agreements imposed by OTAs restrict hotels from providing their guests with the best online price. Despite this, OTAs frequently undercut direct rates, costing the hotel industry millions of dollars every year in lost bookings.
* Most importantly, the guest is likelier to have a better experience if they book direct. Not only should the best price be guaranteed, but guests are also expected to find the best offers, the most flexibility, and the most simple pre- and post-stay communication if they book directly with the hotel.
1. BOOK DIRECT TO SAVE MONEY
Big sites such as Airbnb, HomeAway, VRBO and TripAdvisor add a high percentage of booking fees to the reservation total. Booking directly with the owner or manager cuts out any middle-man or commissions.
2. BOOK DIRECT FOR DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE MANAGER OR OWNER
Only when booking directly are you guaranteed direct contact with the person responsible for the property. This means you can get in touch – without obligation – to inquire about services and amenities before committing.
3. THE BEST PRICE ISN’T ON THE OTAS
Contrary to popular belief, OTAs and aggregator sites (such as Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia etc.) don’t actually provide the best price for travellers. You can save hundreds on commissions by booking direct and booking locally.
4. LOTS OF THE BEST VACATION RENTALS AREN’T LISTED ON THE MAJOR SITES
Due to the high costs associated with using big sites, some of the best homes with the highest demand aren’t even listed. Guests shouldn’t limit their search to OTAs and aggregators, or they could be missing out on the best properties.
5. MANAGERS AND OWNERS HAVE IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE DESTINATION
When booking direct, managers and owners can become a kind of free destination guide. They know the best activities, restaurants and service, providers. They may even have local partnerships or discount deals which can save travellers more money.
6. IF YOU HAVE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS, A MANAGER OR OWNER CAN HELP
Whether your family needs an accessible vacation rental or a pet-friendly option, a manager or owner will work with you directly to meet all your needs before you commit to a booking.
7. OWNERS AND MANAGERS WILL HAVE MORE SPECIAL OFFERS DURING NON-PEAK TRAVEL TIMES
When you communicate directly with the owner or manager, you will be the first to find out about special offers, discounts or exclusive deals.
Even though it was the coldest night of the year (so far) we had a lovely evening with friends around our fire pit, drinking & eating good food and listening to music.
We had a lovely afternoon out today at the valley of the saints near Carnoet, about an hour's drive from Le Deran.
21°c and blue skies, room for the dogs to run about, as the crowds had gone, and a lovely meal outside the visitors centre café.
We will visit again, maybe in the winter to see more new sculptures in a different light (they are making them all the time, and are aiming for 1000 eventually! There are about 100 now, which is still impressive).
Why not take advantage of this great weather, to visit one or a few of the beautiful beaches around the Morbihan coastline? Too many to choose from!
Thanks to our recent guests the Wallis' for the photo!
They had been down to the market in Vannes, and came back with their dinner, fresh crab & lobster, and great wine!
What a fantastic day out at the Josselin medieval festival today. Hot weather, and a great event.
Even Marley & Oliver (new pup!) enjoyed it!
Auberge de la Tourelle in Melrand, just 20 min drive from Le Deran. A wonderful meal last night, sitting outside under the vine covered terrace. We had...
Starters- Foie gras, Rocomadour cheese & feta, stuffed mushrooms.
Mains- Filet steak, pork, duck breast
Desserts (sorry no pics!) - chocolate mousse & caramel, fruit tiramisu
Plenty more on the menu to choose from!
